Day Five of Ten Days of Peace: Affordable Housing Picnic!
September 15, 2012 11 AM – 2 PM: East Bay Housing Organizations invites you to EBHO potluck in the park:
Lake Temescal Park, Park View Site, 6500 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94618
The East Bay Housing Organizations have a saying: “Housing is a human right.” As the Oakland Peace Center continues to lift up its commitment to uniting people and organizations around creating access, opportunity and dignity for all in Oakland and the Bay Area as the means of creating peace, we celebrate the opportunity to connect with people committed to affordable housing, and we celebrate the opportunity to gather as brothers and sisters, breaking bread with one another. Sometimes we are tempted to think of peace solely in terms of reducing shooting or bullying, or increasing meditation and acts of kindness. And yet Father Greg Boyle of East LA is famous for saying “Nothing Stops a Bullet Like a Job.” Likewise, inadequate housing or unsafe housing impacts the psyche of the people living under that strain and also the psyche of the community. We cannot experience community peace if some of us have neither literal nor metaphoric shelter from the storm.
If you have never thought of the connection between affordable housing and peace, take the time to come to this picnic and learn about the connection. But also come to this picnic to be in relationship with brothers and sisters, because that is also at the heart of creating peace during these ten days and every day–knowing one another and supporting one another, sharing a meal and a laugh and a moment of connection.
